IMPORTANT SALE OF HISTORICAL WELSH ITEMS

On Tuesday 9th December, before the start of the December General Antiques sale, there will be a special, important sale of lots from the Vaughan family estates of Hengwrt, Nannau and Rug, Merionethshire, North Wales.

The items mainly relate to the 18th and 19th Century descendants of Cadwgan, 1st Lord of Nannau, second son of Bleddyn ap Cynfyn, King of Powys.

The sale will include family portraits by notable Welsh artist William Parry, an unrecorded portrait of Gruffudd Nanney of Nannau dated 1644 and portrait miniatures of the Nanney Twins Catherine and Janet c.1710.

The estate at Nannau was home to a historic oak tree in which Owen Glendower was supposed to have concealed the body of his cousin Howard Sele. According to legend, in the early 15th Century the cousins were out hunting one day, they were bitter enemies - Glendower was a Rebel and Sele supported King Henry IV. Sele tried to kill Glendower but in the event he was slain, fearing the repercussions of his deed, Glendower then hid the body in the hollow tree were it lay undiscovered for forty years.

During a dreadful storm in 1813, the tree blew down; it was then made into a number of items some of which are included in this sale.

A painting of the White Ox of Nannau by Daniel Clownes depicts the unfortunate animal in all it's glory shortly before being eaten at the grand coming of age celebrations for the Vaughan heir in 1824. As a lasting reminder the fore feet and horns were then mounted in silver to become the White Ox Candelabra.
